The film for Friday 14 August 2026 is “The Day of the Jackal (1973)”.

The film for Friday 7 August 2026 is “Hamnet (2025)”.

The film for Friday 31 July 2026 is “Dr.Strangelove (1964)”.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb is a satirical black comedy directed by Stanley Kubrick that follows the catastrophic consequences of a deranged American general who orders a nuclear attack on the Soviet Union without authorisation. As political leaders, military commanders, and the eccentric former Nazi scientist Dr. Strangelove scramble to prevent global annihilation, a series of absurd misunderstandings, bureaucratic failures, and human follies push the world toward disaster. Blending razor-sharp wit with Cold War tensions, the film exposes the dangers of nuclear deterrence, political incompetence, and the illusion that technology and military planning can fully control human error.

This film was suggested by Kathy Perot who had never seen it. I remember when I saw it in the 1960’s, as a teenager, it scared the hell out of me. I naively thought that the people running the world were sensible adults with our best interests in mind. I now know better that some leaders are more akin to primitive unevolved apes more interested in their power and care nothing for the “apes” who are not members of their tribe. It is also a very funny film starring the comic genius, Peter Sellars, (in several roles). Stanley Kubrick, the director, had a profound message for humanity.

This film is the second suggestion, this term, that I have received from class members.

The film for Friday 24 July 2026 is “To Kill a Mockingbird (2000)”.

To Kill a Mockingbird is a coming-of-age novel set in the small Alabama town of Maycomb during the 1930s. Told through the eyes of the young Scout Finch, it follows her brother Jem and their widowed father, Atticus Finch, a principled lawyer who agrees to defend Tom Robinson, a Black man falsely accused of assaulting a white woman. As the trial exposes the town’s deep-seated prejudice and injustice, Scout and Jem also become fascinated by their mysterious neighbour, Boo Radley. Through these intertwined stories, the novel explores themes of racism, courage, compassion, moral integrity, and the loss of childhood innocence, while showing the importance of understanding others by seeing the world from their point of view.

To Kill a Mockingbird is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential novels in American literature, celebrated for its powerful exploration of justice, racism, compassion, and moral courage.

Welcome back to Term 3 of 5B10 Films 2026
I hope you had a good two week holiday break.

The film for Friday 17 July 2026 is “Best in Show (2000)”.

This is plug to join another film class I am delivering in Term 3.

Best in Show is a sharp and affectionate mockumentary directed by Christopher Guest that follows the owners of five very different dogs as they travel to Philadelphia to compete in the prestigious Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show. Shot in a documentary style and featuring largely improvised dialogue, the film gently satirises the intense world of competitive dog shows while revealing the quirks, insecurities and eccentricities of both the owners and their beloved pets. Rather than mocking its characters cruelly, Best in Show finds humour in their humanity, making it a warm, witty and enduring comedy that has become a cult favourite.

The documentary was suggested by Elizabeth Carvosso as I had never heard of this film. The words in her email were “Delivering such lines with a straight face takes some skill. The dogs must have required quite a bit of training too. A great critique of the worst of one small section of American society with quiet chuckles rather than hilarious shouts. It has brightened me up after missing my concert and a few days not feeling the best.”

Kedi is a warm and visually beautiful 2016 Turkish documentary directed by Ceyda Torun. Set in Istanbul, it follows seven free-roaming street cats whose daily adventures reveal the unique relationship between the city’s feline population and the people who care for them. Through stunning cat-level cinematography and interviews with local residents, the film becomes more than a story about animals—it is a portrait of Istanbul itself, exploring themes of community, compassion, and the connections between humans and the natural world.

The film for Friday 19 June 2026 is “The Death of Stalin (2017)”.

This is a political satire, banned in Russia because it was seen as “anti-Russian propaganda” and in Kyrgyzstan, for allegedly mocking the Soviet Union. The actors who play crucial roles look nothing like the actual people so their photos are shown below. However you will recognise their Russian surnames. The film is very funny.

The Death of Stalin is a dark political satire set in the chaotic days following the death of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin in 1953. As the Soviet leadership scrambles to fill the power vacuum, ambitious rivals, including Nikita Khrushchev and Lavrentiy Beria, engage in a ruthless mix of backstabbing, manipulation, and political intrigue. Blending comedy with historical events, the film portrays the incompetence, and brutality of a regime where even the most powerful men lived in fear, leading to a tense struggle for control of the Soviet Union.

The film for Friday 8 May 2026 is “Taxi Driver (1976)”

Taxi Driver follows Travis Bickle, a lonely and mentally unstable Vietnam veteran drifting through the decaying streets of New York City as a night-time cab driver. Isolated and increasingly disturbed by the crime and moral decay he witnesses, he becomes fixated first on rescuing a young sex worker and then on impressing a political campaign worker he idealises. As his grip on reality slips, Travis arms himself and channels his anger into a violent plan, culminating in a brutal outburst that blurs the line between delusion and heroism, leaving both his motives and the meaning of his actions unsettlingly ambiguous.

The film for Friday 1 May 2026 is “Paris Texas (1985)”

Paris, Texas is a quiet, emotionally charged road film in which a mute, disoriented drifter named Travis (played by Harry Dean Stanton) emerges from the Texas desert after years of absence and slowly reconnects with his young son, Hunter. With the help of his brother as Travis regains the ability to speak and face his past, he embarks on a journey to find Hunter’s mother, Jane (Nastassja Kinski). The film for Friday 24 April 2026 is “Touch (2024)”

Touch is a romantic drama that follows Kristófer, an ageing Icelandic widower who, facing declining health and memory, sets out during the COVID-19 pandemic to find Miko, the Japanese woman he fell in love with more than fifty years earlier while working in a London restaurant. Moving between past and present, the film traces their youthful romance, its sudden and mysterious end, and his late-life journey across continents to uncover what happened and reconnect with a love that has shaped his entire life.

The film is in Icelandic and Japanese with English subtitles.

If this is not your “sort of film”, that’s reasonable. Try “shoshin”, a Japanese idea meaning “beginner’s mind”. Set aside expectations and see it afresh. You may notice details and meanings you would otherwise miss. Different cultures tell stories differently. What feels unfamiliar can become richer if you stay open to it.

Prima Facie 2020 (1.45 hours) is a searing one-woman stage play by Suzie Miller. It follows Tessa, a brilliant criminal defence barrister who believes absolutely in the law’s rationality—until a personal experience of sexual assault forces her to confront how the legal system treats victims. What begins as a confident celebration of courtroom logic turns into a devastating critique of consent, credibility, and whose voices the law truly hears. The production premiered in Sydney, transferred to London’s West End, and became a cultural lightning rod, winning major awards and sparking wide public debate.

The National Judicial College (the UK body for judicial training) listed Prima Facie as mandatory viewing for newly appointed High Court judges in Northern Ireland. The play (or filmed stage performance) is used to offer insight into the lived experience of sexual assault survivors and how the courts treat such testimony, helping judges reflect on empathy and systemic challenges in sexual offence cases.

Harvie Krumpet 2003 (23 Minutes) is a darkly comic clay-animation short film written and directed by Australian filmmaker Adam Elliot and narrated by Geoffrey Rush. It tells the life story of Harvek Milos Krumpetzki, a naïve Polish immigrant who flees war-torn Europe and settles in Australia, where his name becomes “Harvie Krumpet.” Harvie suffers from Tourette’s syndrome and experiences a lifetime of misfortune—lightning strikes, accidents, and personal loss—yet he faces life with innocent curiosity and quiet resilience, collecting small “facts” about the world to help him understand it. Blending humour with melancholy, the film celebrates the absurdities and hardships of ordinary life while affirming the human capacity to endure.

The film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the 2004 Oscars, bringing international recognition to Elliot’s distinctive style of bittersweet stop-motion storytelling.

SYNOPSIS
Il Postino (The Postman) is a gentle, lyrical film set on a small Italian island, where a shy, uneducated fisherman named Mario becomes the personal postman to the exiled Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. As Mario delivers Neruda’s mail, an unlikely friendship forms, and through their conversations Mario discovers the power of poetry, metaphor, and language to express love, dignity, and political awareness. Inspired by Neruda’s words, Mario gains confidence, falls in love with a local woman, and begins to see his own life—and his place in the world—with new clarity, even as the story quietly moves toward a poignant and bittersweet conclusion.

The actor who plays Mario, Massimo Troisi, came to international fame through the success of Il Postino. While working with an increasingly weakened heart from his teenage bout with rheumatic fever, Troisi died in 1994 of a heart attack in his sister’s house at Infernetto, Rome, 12 hours after the camera stopped rolling and main filming on Il Postino had finished. It was reported that he postponed surgery to complete the film. Troisi was just 41.

You may agree with Roger Ebert’s negative comments, I don’t. When watching the film I felt like a 10 year old again, at the local “flicks” where my mate and I were awestruck by the “serial of the week”. We would attend every Saturday afternoon and the weekly episode would finish just as a giant spider was about to devour the film’s hero. Those days bring back great memories. Jurassic Park is a film for the child within us all.

The first film for 2026 will be “A Room with a View (1985)”
It will feature in our film classes on Friday 30 January 2026.

SYNOPSIS
A Room with a View follows Lucy Honeychurch, a young Englishwoman visiting Florence with her prim cousin Charlotte, whose carefully ordered Edwardian life is unsettled when she meets the unconventional George Emerson and his idealistic father. Drawn to George’s passion for life and beauty, Lucy returns to England torn between social propriety—embodied by her safe but stifling engagement to Cecil Vyse—and her own awakening desires, until she must choose between conformity and emotional honesty in a story that contrasts rigid social rules with the liberating power of love, art, and self-discovery.

This film is in English with English subtitles for those who have problems with hearing.

Merchant Ivory (The Company that made the film) – Archival footage and interviews provide insight into the partnership, both professional and personal, between director James Ivory and producer Ismail Merchant. There are interviews with the cast of “A Room with a View”.
