The last film for this year will be “The Remains of the Day (1993)”

The film for this week will be the first half of “TITANIC (1997)”

The film for this week will be “Lost in Translation(2003)”
It will feature in our classes on Friday 7 November 2025.

Sofia Coppola was prompted to make Lost in Translation by a combination of her personal experiences of loneliness, travel, and disorientation during a specific period of her life, particularly while in Tokyo.

The film is highly autobiographical, drawing inspiration from these core elements:

1. Personal Feelings of Disconnection (Charlotte’s Story)

The character of Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) is largely based on Coppola’s own emotional state and experiences in her twenties:

Early Marriage Strain: Coppola was married to director Spike Jonze during the time she conceived the film. The plot draws directly from the strain and emotional isolation she felt in that relationship, where she was often left feeling lost and neglected while her husband (represented by the constantly-working photographer, John) was immersed in his career.
Post-College Drift: Charlotte’s post-graduate feeling of disorientation and uncertainty about her identity and direction in life mirrored Coppola’s own feelings during that period.

2. The Atmosphere of Tokyo (The Setting)

Tokyo, particularly the Park Hyatt Hotel, was the crucial setting that enabled the story:

Jet Lag and Alienation: Coppola used to travel to Tokyo frequently for her clothing line, Milkfed. She has stated that the feelings of jet lag, cultural displacement, and linguistic alienation intensify one’s sense of loneliness and contemplation, providing the perfect backdrop for two lost souls to connect.
The Park Hyatt: She loved the atmosphere of the Park Hyatt Tokyo, describing it as a place where the “camaraderie of foreigners” was palpable—where people who were equally adrift kept running into each other.She resolved early on that she wanted to shoot a movie exclusively in that hotel.

3. Creating a Role for Bill Murray (Bob’s Story)

Coppola wrote the entire character of Bob Harris specifically for Bill Murray.

A Personal Wish: She has admitted she was going through a difficult time and fantasized about an older, wiser, and witty man like Murray showing up to take her on an adventure and offer guidance. She imagined him emerging in that strange, alienating world of a Tokyo hotel.
The Mid-Life Crisis: Bob Harris represents the other side of alienation: the sadness, disillusionment, and gentle mid-life crisis of a marriage that has faded into administrative duties (like arguing over a carpet color).

In essence, Lost in Translation was prompted by Coppola’s desire to capture those fleeting moments of profound human connection that can only occur when two people, completely adrift and unable to communicate with their own world, find a temporary, meaningful anchor in a foreign land.

SYNOPSIS

The film for this week will be “The Conformist (1970)”

SYNOPSIS
The Conformist (1970), directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, is a visually striking psychological drama set in Fascist Italy during the 1930s. Three Colors: Red (1994) is the final film in Krzysztof Kieślowski’s acclaimed Three Colors Trilogy (after Blue and White). Each film is loosely based on one of the ideals of the French Revolution—Liberty (Blue), Equality (White), and Fraternity (Red).

Valentine accidentally injures a dog with her car. Tracing the dog’s collar, she finds its owner, a bitter retired judge who secretly listens in on his neighbors’ phone conversations. At first shocked by his cynicism and intrusion, she gradually develops a deep, if uneasy, friendship with him.

Meanwhile, in a parallel storyline, Auguste, a law student who lives near Valentine, experiences events that mirror aspects of the judge’s past. Though Valentine and Auguste never properly meet during most of the film, their lives seem destined to intersect.

The film for this coming Friday 12 September is “Perfect Days (2023)”

The film follows Hirayama, a middle-aged man in Tokyo who works as a public toilet cleaner. His life is simple and highly routine-based: he wakes up early, waters his plants, drives to work listening to cassette tapes of 60s–80s rock (The Velvet Underground, Patti Smith, Lou Reed), eats lunch in the park, takes photographs of trees, and reads before bed. Despite the modesty of his existence, Hirayama finds joy in small details of daily life.

The story slowly reveals more layers when people from his past and family reappear, showing that he once had a very different life. Without big drama or explanation, the film gently suggests themes of choice, dignity, regret, and acceptance.

The film for this coming Friday 5 September is “Mustang (2015)”

Early summer in a village in Northern Turkey. Five free-spirited teenaged sisters splash about on the beach with their male classmates. Though their games are merely innocent fun, a neighbor passes by and reports what she considers to be illicit behavior to the girls’ family. The family overreacts, removing all “instruments of corruption,” like cell phones and computers, and essentially imprisoning the girls, subjecting them to endless lessons in housework in preparation for them to become brides. As the eldest sisters are married off, the younger ones bond together to avoid the same fate. The fierce love between them empowers them to rebel and chase a future where they can determine their own lives in Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s debut, a powerful portrait of female empowerment.

David Stratton died a few days ago in August. The ABC has published this obituary on their website. In his book “My Favourite Movies“, David featured the film “Picnic at Hanging Rock” as film 81. This is our film for Friday 22 August.

The film for Friday 8 August is “The Road (2009) (1h 51m)”

Last week we saw the animated film “Flow (2024)”. It was a beautiful world with only animals remaining. But where were all the people, what happened to them? This was left unexplained. “The Road (2009)” is a film based to a Cormac McCarthy novel of the same name. It shows a very different view of a post apocalyptic world, one where only people survive. There are no animals and all the plants are dead.

When I saw it in 2010, with of group of friends from a climate change activist group, there was utter silence afterwards. We did not speak to each other it was so horrific. There was no usual discussion shared together with coffee and cake at the nearby cafe. We just went home in silence. Would this be the fate we all faced in the future, or was it Cormac McCarthy’s ideas made visible in a brilliant film adaption of his book.

This film pulls no punches, but it sheds light on the strength of the human spirit. In the link below, the film’s Director JOHN HILLCOAT, discusses the making of the film. Trust him to demonstrate that this is a film all thoughtful viewers should experience.

Who would have thought in 1985 that 21 October 2015 would look like this? The ABC video reports the predictions that the makers of “Back To The Future” made 30 years earlier. Now, 10 years later, the ABC video is 10 years old, and the film 40 years old. What will things be like in 10 years, in 2035, and in 40 years, in 2065? I might make 2035, when I will be 88, but in 2065 I would be 118 years old, so I will not be around to know.

Back To The Future (1985) is one of the top-grossing box office comedies of all time! Twelve Angry Men takes place almost entirely in one room: a hot, stuffy jury deliberation room. Twelve male jurors must decide the fate of a teenage boy accused of murdering his father. A guilty verdict means death in the electric chair. At first, eleven jurors vote “guilty”, but one man—Juror #8 (played by Henry Fonda)—has doubts.

As the deliberations unfold, Juror #8 encourages the others to re-examine the evidence more carefully. Tensions rise, personalities clash, and the jurors confront their own prejudices, biases, and assumptions. Gradually, the verdict begins to shift as reason, empathy, and logic challenge initial gut reactions.

Unfortunately the film has no subtitles but I thought it was timely in view of the Erin Patterson murder case currently taking place in Morwell.

The Lady in the Van (2015) is a British comedy-drama film directed by Nicholas Hytner and written by Alan Bennett, adapted from his own memoir and stage play of the same name. It stars Maggie Smith in a critically acclaimed performance as Miss Mary Shepherd, a homeless woman who parked her van in Bennett’s driveway and ended up living there—for 15 years.

On Friday 2 May the Films 2025 class will resume with the film “Sense and Sensibility (1995)”. This film, by the director Ang Lee, is set in 1795, and is the dramatisation of Jane Austen’s first novel published in 1811. It tells the story of two sisters, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood.

The title “Sense and Sensibility” refers to the contrasting personalities and approaches to life of the two main characters—Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, sisters who embody the qualities named in the title.

“Sense” represents logic, reason, and restraint, and is embodied by Elinor, the older sister. She is composed, rational, and always tries to do what is socially proper, even when her emotions are deeply affected.
“Sensibility” refers to emotion, spontaneity, and romantic idealism, and is embodied by Marianne, the younger sister. She is passionate, expressive, and guided by her feelings rather than social convention or practicality.

So the title is essentially a contrast between head and heart—how reason and emotion shape the lives and loves of the characters. It also reflects one of Austen’s recurring themes: how to balance personal feeling with social duty.

FILM DESCRIPTION
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce) is a remarkably talented young Viennese composer who unwittingly finds a fierce rival in the disciplined and determined Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham). Resenting Mozart for both his hedonistic lifestyle and his undeniable talent, the highly religious Salieri is gradually consumed by his jealousy and becomes obsessed with Mozart’s downfall, leading to a devious scheme that has dire consequences for both men.

The film is a Hollwood version of the life of Mozart.
It is in English with English subtitles for those with hearing problems.
It deviates from the truth somewhat but is nevertheless very entertaining.

SUMMARY

Match Point is a psychological thriller film written and directed by Woody Allen, released in 2005. The film is a gripping exploration of morality, ambition, and chance, set against the backdrop of London’s high society.

The story follows Chris Wilton, a former professional tennis player from a modest background, who becomes a tennis coach for the wealthy. Through this position, he befriends Tom Hewett and begins a romantic relationship with Tom’s sister, Chloe.

While dating Chloe, Chris becomes infatuated with Nola Rice, Tom’s American fiancée, who is struggling to find her footing as an actress. As Chris navigates his way into the upper class through his relationship with Chloe, his obsession with Nola threatens to unravel his carefully constructed life.

The first film to be shown in 2025 is yet to be decided.

However information on the film will be posted above on Saturday 25 January 2025.
There will be a film description, reviews, insightful articles, short documentaries, interviews with directors and actors, why and how the film was made. Read it all, or not at all. Maybe you’d prefer to watch the film before deciding. It’s up to you.

Class members will receive an email on Saturday 25 January 2025. There will be a link to the film, along with a ZOOM link for those who wish to participate ONLINE in the ZOOM discussion session at 10am on Friday 31 January. FACE-TO-FACE participants will need to be seated in THE HALL at the Mary Kehoe Centre for a screening of the film on Friday 31 January 2025 at 1:45pm.

Below are some of the films shown in 2024. I don’t keep records of every film shown as I have been showing 40 different films a year since 2016. But these films will give you an idea of what to expect.

FILMS 2025 – Weekly Film Screenings and Discussions

This webpage is the way I communicate with you every Saturday during term.
Saturday is when I update this page with information about the film for the week.
Every new post will appear at the top of this page.

TWO WAYS TO PARTICIPATE

FACE-TO-FACE – Screenings are held at 1:45 pm every Friday at the Mary Kehoe Centre Hall. Stay afterward for a class discussion. We have a new, quality cinema projector, and an improved sound system. There is ample seating for all.
ONLINE – Watch the film at home on your computer or smart TV, at a time that suits you. Join the Zoom discussion at 10 AM on Friday. All films are free to watch, just one click, no logging in. The films are sourced from the Port Phillip Library.

BOOKING DETAILS

There is only one class in 2025.
Participate FACE-TO-FACE or ONLINE, or swap between them at any time.

Bookings open at 11 am on Friday 13 December 2024. There is ample seating for all when you participate FACE-TO-FACE. The ONLINE option has no restrictions on class numbers. This class has NO waitlist. Everyone gets into this class.
