HRL is Dead

Today, the life support system for the proposed HRL coal-fired power station was finally pulled.

Congratulations one and all, for your taxes will not be spent to burden us with another backward, polluting coal power plant. Our environment has been saved from the ravages that millions of extra tonnes of GHG pollution would have wrought over many decades.

We acknowledge the Federal government for hearing the community’s calls to withdraw the funding of $100 million that was promised to this dirty coal project by the Howard government. It’s not like HRL wasn’t given a chance, six times it failed to meet the conditions of the grant money.

We hope that everyone who has contributed in any way to winning this challenge feels happy hearing this wonderful news! We especially acknowledge the extraordinary efforts of Environment Victoria, Doctors for the Environment, Martin Shield, and our dedicated and talented barristers led by the amazing Environment Defenders Office, who brought the legal challenge on behalf of the community. Meanwhile, thanks to the tireless campaigning from Greenpeace and Quit Coal, aided by Friends of the Earth and local climate groups all over Victoria, there was relentless pressure put on decision makers which surely helped to frighten away investors.

Yes, this has been a long, hard fight and there are going to be countless more until we get the 100 per cent safe, clean energy electricity system that we need. The lessons learned through challenging HRL have been invaluable and we will heed them.

What was the greatest lesson of all? The HRL challenge has demonstrated unequivocally that when a united community determines to stand up for what is best and fair for all WE can win against even the worst odds.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on the LIVE Blog.

People, more power to you!

With thanks and best wishes,

Yes, thanks for keeping up the momentum! Unfortunately the wicked witch of the east is dead, but the wicked witch of the west is still sneakily in Gippsland’s backyard through licenses for mining coal seam gas and coal itself. A significant win, however, gives us the hope and momentum to continue the fight!

  3. Barbara says:

Thanks for your leadership too & email concerning this triumph!
I hope you had time to watch the O G Opening Ceremony which showed humanity at its best- full of friendship, fun, creativity, inspiration, &, above all, cooperation. Now, if only that could be applied to solving climate change & the battle with the fossil fuel industry.
I’m beginning to think that it’s time to take some kind of legal case to the International Court- a class action of most humans against the fossil fuel industry for their part in mainly causing climate change, a crime against humanity.
Is that too radical? What are your & LIVE’s views?
